Soft Balayage on Thick Black-Dyed Hair – No Bleach Damage
Client Hair Profile:
✔️ Hair Type: 2B – soft waves, medium texture
✔️ Density: 80% – full body but flat at the roots
✔️ Previous Colour: Black box dye
Client’s Wish (Desire):
🌸 Had boxed dyed, want a subtle, Sombre ( Soft ombré ) result helps hair looks light and textured —low-maintenance and sophisticated.
The Challenge:
🌸 Thick hair that lacks volume at the roots
🌸 Previous black dye making it harder to achieve a natural colour shift
What Sunny Did:
1️⃣ I first did a colour test to assess how to lift the dark black dye without damaging the hair.
2️⃣ I used a unique bleach bath (a mix of bleach, shampoo, and warm water) for a gentle lift to remove unwanted tones, paired with a standard fading formula for the perfect balance.
✨ The Result:
A flawless, vibrant transformation that feels natural and effortless—perfect for someone who wants a fresh look without compromising on hair health. Ready to glow with low-maintenance elegance?
💬 Backstory – The Consultation
Before she booked in, she messaged me to ask about lightening her box-dyed black hair. I’m always happy when clients reach out first—so I booked extra time for a full consultation and strand test to explore the safest options.
During consults, I usually ask:
“Do you prefer colours that make your skin look brighter—or more tanned?”
Not every Asian client wants a brighter look—some love that warm, sun-kissed tone that brings out a tanner vibe.
She told me she loves when her skin looks more golden, so I planned a colour that enhances her natural glow without washing her out. It’s all about personal vibes.

Client’s Wish:
🌸 She wanted a natural-looking balayage with a cool, ashy tone—something that blends beautifully with her natural black hair and adds soft texture without any brown or orange showing through.
Most of all, she wanted something low-maintenance, gentle, and no harsh bleach—a soft glow that works with her everyday life.
The Challenge:
🌸 Thick, heavy hair with flatness at the roots
🌸 Black dye underneath, making it hard to lift colour naturally

What I Did (My Process):
🎨 What I Did Colour-
1️⃣ We began with a colour test to safely see how her hair would lift.
2️⃣ I used a gentle bleach bath (a custom mix with shampoo and warm water) to softly remove built-up tones from the black dye.
3️⃣ Then, I refined the colour with a soft ash tone—this gave her dark base a natural textured feel, without any orangey-brown brassiness underneath. It blends beautifully with her natural wave.

✂️ What I Did – Haircut
Most people with 2B waves don’t even realise they have that movement—especially if their hair is thick and heavy. That was the case here.
So I tailored a soft reshape:
✔️ Medium layers to reduce bulk and help the wave come through
✔️ Jaw-length face-framing to highlight her cheekbones
✔️ 135º butterfly layers for texture and softness at the ends
✨ The Result:
A gorgeous, healthy balayage that feels soft and voluminous.
An effortless, soft wave butterfly cut that now flows naturally— 3 mins day to day styling, only dryer, no heat tool need
